The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly

Hello fellow readers! Here comes 2020 and for me that means a new shelf in my “Goodreads” app so I can keep track of the books I read. I don’t set reading goals, but I like to look back and say, “That was a great book!” or “Wow, why did I waste my time reading that?” The kid has decided he would like to make a “Goodreads” account this year and in true 10-year-old boy fashion, turn it into a competition. I happily agreed to this healthy competition because why wouldn’t you agree to something you are certain to win?? Ha! (I mean come on kid; I’ve reading 75+ books a year for longer than you’ve been alive)

Anyhow, I was planning on writing a list of all the books I read in 2019 as I could very literally talk about books all day, but I figured some of you may get bored so here is my list of Top 3’s! These may not be books that were necessarily published in 2019 but I read them in 2019.

My 3 favorites (non-indie) of 2019:

1. Tell No One by Harlan Coben: Brah, this book was bananas. I HIGHLY suggest it. Recommended by my home girl, Kenzie.

2. Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus: This one got me, I couldn’t figure it out and I love that! This was one of those that I kept seeing advertised so I felt like I HAD to read it and I’m so glad I did.

3. Seeing Red by Sandra Brown: I love Sandra Brown, I’ve loved every one of her books I’ve read but I don’t seek her out and I’m not sure why. This one blew me away and has a sad-ish ending. I cried. 5 stars! I picked this up on the sale table at B&N.

Now, my 3 favorites (indie) of 2019: Let me just say I know all of these authors and I have signed copies of their books and I adore their faces. These are just my faves of 2019…not of all time!

1. Bear Necessities by Robbie Cox: I am feeling this Para-Force! Oooohh, this book is so exciting and sweet, but all of Robbie’s books are! This is book 3 of the Bull Creek Chronicles…read them ALL!

2. Dick by Julie Morgan & Gracen Miller: OMG this book. It’s HOTT and I adore the characters. They hooked me at SCBL2019, yelling “How about some Dick?” As a card-carrying lesbian, this is one Dick I truly approve of!

3. Let Shadows Fall by Terri A. Wilson: Y’all, this book though. It takes you on a journey like you’ve never been on! I believe this is the first book in a new series.

I could go on and on…the above-mentioned indie authors have a zillion books that are all amazing, I would be remiss though if I didn’t mention the Black Hollow series. There are several authors writing about the town of Black Hollow and their interesting inhabitants. I’m OBSESSED with it.

Here are my 3 LEAST favorite books of 2019. Even if I’m not feeling a book, I rarely Do Not Finish.

1. The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson: This one I DNF. I tried really, really hard but it just wasn’t written in a way I enjoyed. (I only picked it because of the show on Netflix…LOVE the show)

2. Turtles All the Way Down by John Green: Dude, I did finish this one, but this book made me literally feel uncomfortable, it gave me anxiety. The story was good but a painful read.

3. The Reckoning by John Grisham: Grisham is one I buy automatically because I’ve never read one of his I didn’t like…until now. I finished but it was HARD. The underlying story is fantastic…I couldn’t figure it out, but it was SO long and SO boring…you can skip the entire second part and it would still be too long and too boring.

Well, that’s it. Again, I read 78 books this year and I could continue on and on and on, but I won’t. I hope you read some amazing books in 2019 and even more in 2020! Be on the look out for those Lori Joseph books to put on your Christmas list next year!
