Can I get a hallelujah…

Writer's picture: Lori JosephLori Joseph

When Hank brings the sermon And Cash leads the choir It gets my cold cold heart burning Hotter than a ring of fire When this wonderful world gets heavy And I need to find my escape I just keep the wheels rolling, radio scrolling 'Til my sins wash away

This isn’t something I’ve talked about before & I’m not sure why but…music. I connect with songs like I connect with books, deeply & almost spiritually. I have all the feelings all the time about everything, a trait that I know drives my family bonkers, but I can’t help it! Music helps put into words those all over the place emotions. A song that grabbed me the very first time I heard it was “My Church” by Maren Morris because it is so spot on about my relationship with music. Music is there for you for literally every scenario in your life; Celebrating? There’s a song for that. Exercising? Music got you. Just lost someone? You can wallow in songs for days.

Our house almost always has music playing. We rarely watch TV during day light hours so if I’m writing, music is on. Our kid has such great taste in music he is usually allowed to pick a playlist at some point in the day as well. (Although he has recently gotten into rap & that’s not really my jam, but we listen with an open mind) Today’s playlist is Brandi Carlile. I’ve heard all of her songs 40,745 times but who’s counting? About 4 years ago, my wife & I saw Brandi in concert, her final song was “Amazing Grace.” I’ve never heard a more powerful & emotional version of this song. The lights were low, there was no accompanying music. Brandi sang this a cappella & I still tear up thinking about it.

See that’s where all these feelings come in… I can relate songs to so very many situations in my real life & my made-up worlds. I like to make playlists to go along with the scenes in my stories, & I also like to write little stories based on songs. Maybe I’ll publish this nonsense at some point. So, tell me, what songs bring out all your emotions? Happy, sad, excited, melancholy…I want them all!
